Alex the Eagle Scout

Last night, June 23, 2006, Alex Edwards was awarded the highest rank in Scouting, the Eagle Scout award. It was a very important event for all members of Dana's family as well as all the rest of our family. There was an impressive ceremony at his ward. His scout troop, and other Eagle Scouts attended. Both sets of grandparents (Edwards and Williams), Uncle Scott, Aunt Emily, Uncle Dale, and baby Melanie attended. Many of Alex's ward members were there. Alex received many tributes for his accomplishment, for persevering, and for being a good example to other scouts and their families. His mother Pam, father Dana, and his scout leaders spoke, mentioning many interesting things about Alex and the good things he has done in scouting and in his life. It was obvious from the demeanor of the other young men that Alex is a respected member of his troop, and of his priesthood quorum. With the award came a whole folder of letters of congratulation from the Boy Scouts of America, high-ranking government leaders, including Arizona Governor Janet Napalitano, Sheriff Joe Arpaio, and others. That alone was impressive in itself. It shows the level of respect accorded those who achieve this rank. Alex then spoke briefly about his award and thanked many individuals for supporting him, especially his Mom and Dad. Part of the Eagle award includes pins for the scout's father, mother and scout leader. Alex honored his parents and his leader by pinning these awards on them. The whole family is very happy about this milestone for Alex. As the first grandson in Grandpa/Grandma Edwards's family, Alex has set the example we hope others will follow. The Eagle Scout award is of great worth to the individual throughout his life. Many nationally prominent men are Eagle Scouts. Only four percent of all scouts achieve this rank. Leaders everywhere realize its importance in shaping the life of the young man. Hearty congratulations to Alex and to all his family.
